Some people think museums and art galleries should show works of art and history from their own country rather than from different parts of the world.
It is believed that only artifacts from one’s own culture should be displayed in museums or galleries . However, I disagree with this statement and think that it is valuable for foreign artifacts to be shown in those places as well.
Admittedly, it is necessary for museums and galleries to display artworks from their own cultures. The primary reason is that visitors would gain an in-depth understanding about their past generations’ life, inspiring them to relate their current life to ancestors’ experiences. This can enhance their sense of belonging to the nation. Furthermore, visitors will be very proud of their own culture, facilitating the cultivation of national awareness. As a result, residents may develop into responsible citizens who are concerned about the well-being of the society. They may choose environment-friendly means to travel or obey the policies and regulations implemented by the government, contributing to a sound living environment and stable society.
Nevertheless, museums and galleries should also showcase artworks from other cultures. This is because every culture has stereotypical views and shortcomings. If only artworks from one’s own culture are available in museums or galleries, this may restrict visitors’ mind and their potential to think creatively. By contrast, if people can be exposed to history from other cultures, they will learn new ways to approach a task, which encourages them to think outside the box, enhancing creative thinking. In the future, when facing a problem, they may be able to consider it from different angles, resulting in more efficient problem solving.
As discussed above, local and foreign artworks provide people varied benefits. Therefore, both of them should be exhibited in museums and galleries. （273 words）
